CPU celebrates CEW in 3D
True to its commitment to EXCEL (Exemplary Christian Education for Life), 黑料专区 celebrated its Christ Emphasis Week with the theme 鈥淟ife in 3D (Discipleship Determines Destiny)鈥 on February 24 to March 4, 2017.

Christian Life Committee听singing the CEW Themesong – I Will Follow.
The Faculty and Staff Convocation was held on February 24, 2017 at the University Church. University President, Teodoro C. Robles in his opening message reminded CPU faculty and staff about the importance of discipline in serving the university. 鈥淛ust like our theme, our discipline will also determine the destiny of 黑料专区, we have to continually grow, to be like athletes always reaching for the goal of finishing the race with excellence.鈥
Pastor Parpa, encourages CPU faculty and staff to live a life of 3D
For the introduction of the theme and text, Rev. Cris Amorsolo Sian shared Proverbs 25:28 and Hebrews 12:11. According to him, both Scripture texts speak about the importance of discipline in the social, political and economic aspects of living a Christian life. 鈥淒isciple will unleash our true potential. Jason Garette, the coach of the Dallas Cowboys said: Discipline is letting my athletes do what they don鈥檛 want to do so they can become who they always wanted to be.鈥
Guest speaker, Pastor Ronald Parpa from Jaro Evangelical Church encouraged CPU faculty and staff to live a life of discipline and excellence. From the biblical text Hebrews 12:11, he shared that no one loves to be out of his comfort zone. 鈥淥ur momentary discomfort will be nothing compared to the glory we will receive. It is true even with our health, with our state of mind 鈥 when we persevere during discipline we attain the best versions of ourselves.鈥
CPU High School Students lead the worship.
The original schedule of the opening program was supposedly February 27 however due to the national transport strike it was moved on February 28.
Pastor Albert Mark Java, sharing his experience to high school Centralians told the story of two brothers; both of them had the same potential to succeed to gain awards and medals but only one was disciplined while the other was lazy. He later on revealed that this was his and his brother鈥檚 story. Later on in life, when he came to know the goodness of the Lord, he also lived a life of discipline by serving others through the ministry.
CPU faculty and staff during the CEW Convocation.
Pastor Jabez Oberes, on the other hand shared that discipline pays the cost of our dreams. 鈥淚 am in a room full of dreamers. Everybody has something they want to achieve. Have you counted the cost of your dreams? Discipline is the most important ingredient of achieving your dream.鈥
According to her there is a certain discomfort in discipline that makes us learn. 鈥淒iscipline includes leaving behind all negative talks and experiences, knowing that the Grace of God has made you whole, forgetting all your past sins and trespasses. In the bible, Joseph had to leave a temptation 鈥 a flat tire takes a long time to get there.听 It also means correcting, when you are good at something, it is hard to accept correction but discipline will make us humble. We should accept correction as part of our God-given destiny.鈥
Worship is part of the Centralian life of excellence.
She also encouraged Centralians by telling them about the delights of the destination once we鈥檝e chosen to undergo discipline. 鈥淭he delight of destination includes the delight of right living, delight of a protected life 鈥 a Christ-like life. From the comfort of the garden to the discomfort of the cross, Jesus has undergone the greatest act of discipline for us that we, too, in our daily discipline will share in his victory.
Christ Emphasis Week is part of CPU麓s vision of producing Chirstian life long learners.
CEW speakers include: Pastor Ronald F. Parpa, Rev. Jireh John B. Francia, Rev. Neva Ruth P. Pendon, Rev. Samuel G. Talha, Rev. Dr. Kenneth J. Gerada, Pastor Lloyd U. Basco, Pastor Melanie C. Arandela, Pastor Love Joy Q. Leysa, Pastor Jabez C. Oberes and Pastor Albert Mark A. Java.

The Prodigy of Optimism
A Centralian Story of Excellence by Keziah G. Huelar
Riego with TOSP founder, Jose Concepcion, Dr. Margen Java, Director of CPU SDP, Engr. Aries Roda Romallosa, Department Chair of the Agricultural Engineering Department, his mother Mary Jane (beside him) and his sister Marie (beside Engr. Romallosa). Photo credits Engr. Aries Roda Romallosa
The day was dim as swollen hearts awaken to find their homes ripped apart, their flora ravished and their loved ones gone 鈥 Typhoon Yolanda was unforgiving. Nothing but stories of loss and pain were left to the people of Brgy. Pulo-Pi帽a, Concepcion.
Riego Garcia Ferrer, stands along the shorelines of his hometown, his heart grappled with grief. He understands more than ever that hope does not dwell on sunshine; rather it pierces the storm and becomes stronger when it is needed the most. The paradox of optimism is that: its most beautiful form cannot be found in comfort but rather in tides of trials.
Growing up in a small town did stop Riego from dreaming big. He graduated as class valedictorian in Pulo-Pi帽a Elementary School and as class salutatorian from Pulo-Pi帽a National High School. 鈥淢y mom, as a teacher taught me the value of education. It is a great equalizer and it can be used to help others. My experiences in life taught me that poverty can be defeated by striving hard, that you have to know when to give back and you always have to be true to yourself.鈥
Riego鈥檚 love for education made him persevere. He was willing to do what he can and what he must to continue his studies. 鈥淒uring high school, I would make听yemas听and other delicacies so that I can have money to go to school. I would request some听bangka听drivers if they could buy me some ice candy from the main Concepcion island so that I could sell them to my classmates for extra income.鈥
Being the 4th of eight children with his mother as a kindergarten teacher and his father as a fisherman, college education seemed impossible for Riego. 鈥淢y mother had to go abroad for a while to provide for our family. Knowing our circumstance, I know I could never go to college.听 But I never lost my optimism. I know that God was working out His purpose in me even when it felt that there was nothing to look forward to.鈥
A CHED officer visited to his hometown and Riego鈥檚 mother was able to get him a scholarship. The officer saw Riego鈥檚 potential and encouraged him to pursue an Agriculture related course. 鈥淚 originally wanted to be an electrical engineer but heeding the advice of the CHED officer, I took up Agricultural Engineering at CPU, where my sister also studies.鈥
He eventually learned to love Agricultural Engineering and he found a new passion in protecting the environment. 鈥淢y course opened my eyes to the reality and the plight of our farmers, there are so many concerns regarding agriculture that needs to be addressed. I feel that my eyes had been opened to the need of the community 鈥 I had to respond.鈥
Riego pioneered听Concepcion Centralians, an organization that partnered with the LGU to implement projects that promote environmental sustainability. Perhaps his greatest contribution to the municipality was the passage of two ordinances he authored. He wrote two ordinances; the first aimed to strengthen the participation in the Disaster Risk Reduction Management of the municipality, the other ordinance mandated high school and college students of the municipal schools in Concepcion and NIPSC to plant one mangrove tree as a requirement for graduation. 鈥淒uring my stay in the College of Agriculture, we had an educational tour in Bayawan City, Negros, there we saw alternative ways of segregating waste, recycling and reusing biomass. The tour really made me realize that there is so much that we can do for the environment and one way of making the impact last is to involve the LGUs through an ordinance.鈥
It was in CPU that Riego鈥檚 potential in leadership developed at its peak. He became CPU Republic Senator and eventually Prime Minister in his fourth year in college. 鈥淚 come from a very small college and it was an honor to represent CARES in the university scene. I remember campaigning by myself around the campus 鈥 I was really determined to be a leader and share my ideas for the upliftment of CPU.鈥
Riego鈥檚 leadership in CPU and in the community was recognized as he became an Ayala Young Leader representing CPU in the AYL Congress at Lima Park Hotel in Batangas. There he met fellow passionate leaders who are also making an impact in their respective communities.
After graduation, Riego further brought pride to the Centralian Community by being awarded as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Students of Philippines on February 9, 2017 at the Heroes Hall of Malca帽ang Palace, Manila.
Despite the many accomplishments he received, Riego counts his faith in God as the strongest foundation of his success. 鈥淚 remember sleeping with rainwater passing through the holes of our roof and I was just crying, asking God to give me the strength to persevere to change my circumstance and help me and my family. My accomplishments are because of the optimism He gave me, because of His word that He always works for the good of those who love Him.鈥
Remembering EDSA
By: Cyrus A. Natividad
A couple of years after my student days in CPU, I found myself conforming to the lifestyle of a metropolis.听 I survived the training period with an industry that later allowed me to go to many places, meet many people and circumstances in Metro Manila. My daily grind as a salesman then consisted of waking up at Four A.M., one hour of walking, running or going to the gym. I prefer walking, while our residence was just near the highway.
The highway that I travelled most during my stint is the Epifa帽o de los Santos Avenue (a.k.a. EDSA) which has become a by-word for democracy. Later on, when we had the first People Power revolution in EDSA in 1986, everyone has to walk from home or places of work around Metro Manila. I still cherish the experience of being there and taking part in the making of history.
The EDSA People Power (popularly known worldwide as a bloodless revolution) was a result of the long overdue struggle for freedom of the Filipino people; a bubble that burst after more than a decade of suppressed freedom of expression, of rights and privileges in society.
The death of Ninoy Aquino started the campaign for civil disobedience and sustained anti-government demonstration. Then the youth had a lingering question in their minds: What will happen to us 鈥 to our future if this government is not changed? Generally people had fears ever since the State of Martial Law was declared. But the youth of that time pursued the answers to the question that they posed themselves. This resulted to the toppling down of the Marcos dictatorship.
We look back to the EDSA People Power of 1986 so that we are reminded that government emanates from the people; and democracy is reliant upon the will of the people.
I revisited EDSA a few years ago during its anniversary celebration. More of the same were recalled, spoken, and committed. I was drifting on the memory of the people power revolution when familiar faces showed up. Centralians! They鈥檙e the cream of the crop of the old CPU Republic among those who dreamed and worked for social change. Long before the EDSA Revolution, we have a student group that meet on certain days- to discuss some 鈥榚dible鈥 issues about our country and the government.
Contrary to what some people in the campus during that time thought about our group, and what we鈥檝e been talking about; those were glorious moments when we sought wisdom from the Word of God to guide our confused minds on the political development unfolding in our country at that time.
I had coffee with my long lost friends along EDSA. We didn鈥檛 talk much or recall the events that led to the bloodless revolution, but of the Central that we love; the Central that trained us to be patient, resilient and forgiving. We may have had reservations, but certainly we believe that God is guiding us all along. We pray for our nation, we pray for the Filipino people. May God bless us all.
